THE LANGLEY FAMILY
Elizabeth LANGLEY was the daughter of Moses LANGLEY and Sarah Jane GOMMERSALL. She was born in 1884. According to the 1881 Census, Moses was born c1840 (he was recorded as being 40 years of age)but on his marriage certificate in 1869 he is recorded as being 24 years old, putting his birth as late as 1846. Moses was the son of George LANGLEY, pitman. Moses was married on March 13 1869 to Sarah Jane GOMMERSAL, daughter of John GOMMERSAL, pitman. Sarah Jane was 18 at the time of her marriage.

On a recent visit (Feb 2002) to Newcastle Local Studies Library I found a transcript of the Marriage Registers for Kelloe 1836 to 1905 and went through it looking for Langleys.
The earliest entry was for Moses's marriage in 1869.
Further on I found the following entries:

Martha LANGLEY aged 23 married George HACKWORTH aged 25 on 1 Jan 1903
What relation to Moses are these Langley's?
In the nearby parish of Houghton le Spring, I found the following marriage
25 Feb 1865 Garman LANGLEY aged 21 to Catharine HEDLEY aged 19.
Is this another Langley relation?
Using FREEBMD I found a birth reference for Abraham Langley and requested the certificate: He was born on 26 Feb 1870in Shotton Colliery to George Langley and Charlotte Langley nee GREENWOOD. George Langley was a coalminer.

I have obtained the birth certificate for Mary LANGLEY which shows she was born on 10 Jul 1842 at Framwellgate Moor, Durham, the daughter of George LANGLEY, Pitman and Ann LANGLEY formerly SIMPSON.
Before she married George LANGLEY, Ann SIMPSON was evidently married/had a liaison with James HARKNESS. Her son James has James HARKNESS, Iron Fitter listed as his father on his marriage certificate to Eleanor BAINBRIDGE on 02 May 1864. This probably means that both James and Sarah are in fact HARKNESS's, not LANGLEYs and that Moses LANGLEY was the first born child of George LANGLEY, not the third.
So... who was George LANGLEY?
The nearest 'candidate' I've found so far (even though the dates don't completely match up) is George LANGLEY born in Warkworth in Northumberland in 1799. So I'm 'adopting' him until I find other information to prove differently.

Working on the basis that James LANGLEY took his mother's maiden name when he became James SIMPSON, I started looking for an Ann SIMPSON born in Washington in c1811.
